While some saw flurries of snow, other areas in the United Kingdom were mostly mild, with the highest temperature recorded in Bude, Cornwall at 12.6C.

"There will be some snow, mainly on the hills across Scotland, but there could be a centimetre or two in the lower areas", said forecaster Marco Petagna. Some delays to air travel due to snow are possible.

Most of the United Kingdom has enjoyed a mild Christmas Day, although it has been wet in some areas.

Those dreaming of a white Christmas were in luck, as parts of Scotland saw snow towards the end of Christmas Day.

Then northern England and Scotland will see heavy snow on Friday and Saturday.

"There is also a smaller chance that individual homes and businesses could be flooded".

'Northern Ireland, western Scotland and parts of north-west England will see heavier and more persistent rain on Christmas Day, while Boxing Day is likely to be sunnier but colder for most parts'.

"Some roads and railways are likely to be affected by longer journey times due to standing water or snow".

These larger amounts are more likely over Wales whilst East Anglia and Lincolnshire see little or no snow.

He said: "Gales to reach 55mph in exposed spots with heavy rain with wintry showers which could reach southern regions".

Parts of Britain have experienced a white Christmas after snow fell for a couple of hours in Spadeadam, Cumbria.

The highest temperature - of 12.5C - was recorded in Hawarden, Clywd, in north-east Wales.
