Recognising Jerusalem as capital would cause catastrophe: Turkey

A general view shows Jaffa Gate of Jerusalem's Old City as it is seen from David Tower December 4, 2017.

"If the (current) status of Jerusalem is changed and another step is taken. that would be a major catastrophe", Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said during a televised press conference.

"Such a step will dismiss the peace process in the Middle East, which is already in a fragile state, and cause new tensions and conflicts in the Middle East".

"The status of Jerusalem and Temple Mount have been determined by worldwide agreements".

French President Emmanuel Macron earlier said he reminded Trump in a phone call that the fate of Jerusalem should be determined in negotiations on setting up a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Jerusalem remains at the core of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, with Palestinians hoping that East Jerusalem - now occupied by Israel - might eventually serve as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Trump will announce Wednesday his decision on whether the US will recognize the contested city of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, according to the White House.

US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital is extremely alarming, Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın said Tuesday, noting that the decision contradicts global agreements and United Nations resolutions. "Rather than open new doors, it would drag the region into a new disaster".
