Rohingya refugees still fleeing from Myanmar to Bangladesh

Western politicians have also travelled to Myanmar and Bangladesh to witness the crisis in recent months. Myanmar's army says it has been targeting Rohingya militants. Zeid Raad al-Hussein asked the UN's Human Rights Council at a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland overnight, ABC News reported.

China, the Philippines and Burundi voted against the measure.

Myanmar's security forces may be guilty of genocide against the Rohingya Muslim minority, according to the top United Nations human rights official this week. Earlier, the state Department threatened to impose sanctions against Myanmar for violations of the rights of the Muslim Rohingya.

While not mentioning the Rohingya directly, Ambassador Htin Lynn says any "dehumanization" of people in Myanmar "could be an act of extremist individuals".

The leader of a United Nations -mandated fact-finding mission for Myanmar say it's examining "in depth" allegations that genocide or crimes against humanity have been committed against the Rohingya.

Marzuki Darusman, head of an independent global fact-finding mission on Myanmar, said by video from Malaysia that his team had interviewed Rohingya refugees, including children in the Bangladeshi port city of Cox's Bazar, who recounted "acts of extreme brutality" and "displayed signs of severe trauma".

"It also calls for Aung San Suu Kyi (Myanmar's de facto leader) to exercise moral leadership, something that's needed now more than ever", Engel said in his remarks on the House floor on Wednesday.

Marzuki Darusman, who heads the independent fact-finding mission, told the Human Rights Council by videoconference that his team has "not yet come to any conclusion on these issues".

Thirty-three of the council's 47 members backed the text listing a long line of horrific abuses, including summary killings of children, rape, torture and large-scale forced displacement, which it said indicated "the very likely commission of crimes against humanity".

In the sprawling camps of southern Bangladesh, now home to over 800,000 Rohingya, many say they would prefer to remain there, because they do not trust Myanmar's assurances of safe return.
