Ryan Reynolds Will Play Detective Pikachu In New Movie

Ryan Reynolds Will Play Detective Pikachu In New Movie

While the flick's full cast is being kept mum for now, THR shares Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's Justice Smith will star as well as Big Little Lies' Kathryn Newton.

The film will be directed by Rob Letterman, who previously directed the honestly-pretty-good Goosebumps movie.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds' performance will be motion capture-based, and the story follows Smith's character when he teams up with Detective to track down his kidnapped father.

Filming on the project is expected to start soon.

Ryan Reynolds has gotta catch 'em all - all the criminals, that is. The script comes from Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls).

Before Reynolds was on an alleged shortlist for the role, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, and Hugh Jackman were also considered for the titular Pikachu. Newton is said to play the role of a journalist.

Though Pokemon began life as a card collecting game, it soon spread itself into multiple arenas, with a variety of anime shows and video games. Are you more or less interested in Detective Pikachu due to Reynolds' involvement? It will also be produced through Universal Pictures, who will distribute the film in the US and most global markets. Reynolds, however, is set to return as the trash-talking superhero in "Deadpool 2", expected to be released on June 1 next year. Let us know in the comment section below!
