Saakashvili Appears in Court in Ukraine

Thousands protested in Ukraine on Sunday demanding the impeachment of President Petro Poroshenko and the release of Georgian ex-leader Mikheil Saakashvili from detention, Reuters reported.

Ukrainian prosecutors allege that Saakashvili cooperated with allies of former Ukraine president Viktor Yanukovych, now in hiding in Russia, and took money from the Russians. No day for that has been announced.

During his hearing, he said he will continue his hunger strike, which he had started on Saturday, if the court sends him to prison.

Saakashvili, 49, entered Ukrainian politics after serving as president of Georgia following the Georgian "Rose Revolution" he spearheaded in 2003.

The Prosecutor General's Office declared Saakashvili wanted under three articles of the Criminal Code: an attempt on a crime (part 1 Article 15), committed by prior agreement with a group of persons (part 2 Article 28), and assistance to members of a criminal organization and concealment of their criminal activity (part 2 Article 256). Saakashvili was elected the next year to replace him.

He left Georgia in 2013, and in 2015 was named by Poroshenko to be Odessa governor.

He has become an outspoken critic of Poroshenko, who he has accused of corruption.

Georgia stripped Saakashvili of his citizenship after his move to Ukraine. He was out of the country when he lost Ukrainian citizenship, but forced his way into Ukraine in September, barging across the border with Poland with the help of a crowd of supporters.

Noteworthy, Saakashvili' term of detention expires tonight, December 11, TSN said. But police have not moved to disperse it, possibly concerned that such action would only inflame tensions.
