Saudi grants visas to Qatar chess team, denies Israel

Saudi grants visas to Qatar chess team, denies Israel

"The fact that players from Iran and Qatar may decide not to participate, after consulting their own authorities, is clearly their own individual decision", said an official statement from FIDE.

Seven Israeli players had filed requests for visas to participate in the games to be held in Riyadh on December 26-30 as part of the world rapid and blitz chess championships.

Five Israeli chess competitors are no doubt certain that the adage holds fast after being denied entry to Saudi Arabia to compete in the speed chess championship being hosted by the Kingdom from Tuesday through the end of the week.

But on Sunday that worldwide body announced that its efforts were for naught.

The FIDE-sponsored championship marks the first time a major chess championship takes place in the country, which has been experiencing unprecedented social change since Mohammed bin Salman was named Crown Prince. Israel and Saudi Arabia do not have diplomatic relations, though Israeli officials frequently hint at warming behind-the-scenes ties.

Israel and Saudi Arabia share a common fear of Iran's attempts to increase its influence in the region.

The incumbent World Rapid and Blitz Champions, Sergey Karjakin from Russian Federation and Vassily Ivanchuk from Ukraine, along with over 180 top grandmasters have confirmed their participation in what is going to be the strongest open events of the year, the Saudi Gazette reported.

Aizenberg said FIDE should ensure Israeli players could compete in worldwide events and that the Israeli federation was considering all options, including legal action and holding an global competition in Israel for players excluded from the Saudi match.

Israel Chess Federation Spokesman Lior Aizenberg told Reuters that "various parties" are still working to help the Israeli chess players receive the necessary visas.

FIDE had said in November it was undertaking a "huge effort" to ensure all players were granted visas.
