Smartphone addiction linked to chemical imbalance in young brains

The study has not been peer-reviewed, but the findings do align with other studies that indicate smartphone and internet addiction can harm the mind.

Young patients addicted to smartphones can develop significant imbalances in brain chemistry, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago. These subjects were given MRS examinations both before and after their behavioral therapy, while the control patients were examined once to establish a baseline.

In the study, researchers examined the brains of 19 internet- and smartphone-addicted teenagers and 19 nonaddicted teenagers using magnetic resonance spectroscopy, a form of MRI that can reveal changes in the chemical composition of the brain.

The MRS exam additionally uncovered that contrasted with the solid controls, the dependent teenagers had higher proportion of gamma aminobutyric corrosive (GABA) to glutamate-glutamine in their foremost cingulate cortex. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, meaning that it blocks nerve cells from firing. Wintermark was not included with the new research but rather said that he was interested by it in light of the expanding predominance of phones and web gadgets in the public arena.

Smartphone addiction linked to chemical imbalance in young brains

Technology addicts have a chemical imbalance in their brains - although whether this is a cause or effect of their excessive internet and smartphone use has yet to be determined.

For most people, checking email first thing in the morning or spending an hour scrolling though Instagram after work does not signify an internet addiction. Studies from around the world have found that the rates of internet addiction in young people range from less than 1 percent to 18 percent.

In the study, researchers took brain scans from 19 young people who were diagnosed with internet addiction or a device, and compared it with 19 young people who had healthy control. The addicted youth also reported higher instances of depression, anxiety, insomnia severity and impulsiveness, in comparison with the "healthy" controls.

Dr. Seo said the ratios of GABA to creatine and GABA to glutamate were significantly correlated to clinical scales of internet and smartphone addictions, depression and anxiety. Additionally, 12 of the addicted participants were provided nine weeks of cognitive behavioral therapy that had been modified from a therapy program from gaming addiction. Participants also completed tests to measure the severity of their addiction. "That's the part of the study I find most interesting".
