Snow and ice warning issued for north-west

Offaly is now covered by a fresh snow-ice warning from Met Éireann.

A Met Office yellow snow warning has been issued for the city for Sunday (December 10).

Accumulations of up to three centimetres are possible in parts while icy conditions are likely on the roads.

Sleet and snow will continue to fall into Saturday night, mainly over northern areas, while it will remain cold across the country.

The warning kicks in at 4pm today and lasts 24 hours.

A weather front from the north is to hit the country in the next few days with Friday set to be one of the coldest days of the winter to date.

"When evening comes in, temperatures will drop and those showers will turn wintry in Donegal, north Mayo, Connemara, north Longford and north Midlands".

The weather forecaster said there will be further accumulations of snow locally over northern counties as well as on hills, mountains and higher ground elsewhere.

"There will be no snow during the day". Temperatures will be low and it will stay cold for most of next week.

Coastal areas should be milder with temperatures closer to 5 or 6 degrees.
