Snow, Strong Winds Force Bridge Closure on Cape During Christmas Storm

Snow, Strong Winds Force Bridge Closure on Cape During Christmas Storm

The previous state record for a two-day storm - 44 inches March 20-21, 1958, in Morgantown (which is in Caernarvon Township in Berks and Lancaster counties) - was smashed within 30 hours with the possibility of more snow during the day and up to seven more inches overnight, the weather service said. A dusting of the frosty white stuff is fine - even a few inches isn't a big deal, as long as you have a shovel and a bit of salt to keep it in check - but Erie, Pennsylvania, is dealing with record-breaking snowfall that would bring any city to its knees.

Sunday promises drier weather throughout the state and what forecasters said would be the best opportunity to travel or dig out before snow again sweeps northward across Maine Christmas Day.

Erie's previous Christmas day snowfall record was a mere 8.1 inches in 2002. The previous snowiest month ever was 66.9 inches in December 1989.

This wasn't just a snowstorm record for the city, however.

In addition, a new storm system is moving into the Pacific Northwest with up to 2 inches of snow expected in Seattle and a mix of ice and snow in Portland, Oregon. Unfortunately, most of the trucks were forced to spend the bulk of their time clearing the busiest streets while residential neighborhoods remained snowed in. The National Weather Service is forecasting up to 4 feet of snow in the next 48 hours in western NY. The Bangor region is expected to see between 6 and 10 inches of new accumulation before 4 p.m. PennDOT has warned motorists to exercise caution as the time between Christmas and New Year's often comes with a spike in auto accidents.

A lake-effect snow warning continues into Wednesday, with the potential for up to a foot of additional snowfall it the city. Follow him on Facebook and Twitter.
