Texas 7-year-old's heartbreaking letter to Santa inspires flood of donations

Crystal's mother, Maria Isabel Cortez, was overwhelmed and proud of her children, telling KGBT that he has raised her children to "appreciate the little that we have".

A first grader's heartbreaking letter to Santa has prompted the community to donate blankets, money, food and other items to Monte Cristo Elementary this holiday season.

Crystal wrote her letter after Espiricueta explained to her students the difference between a want and a need.

"Dear Santa Claus, I have [been] good this day". She said that instead of a doll for Christmas, she wants a ball so that she and her brother could enjoy the toy. "I need a [blanket]", the girl had written.

Garcia said she had expected to just drop off the gifts, but school staff called Espiricueta, who then brought a shy, soft-spoken little girl from her classroom to meet Garcia.

"I had no idea she was going through hard times being that she is always at school with a big smile".

"I felt like I needed to personally give something to this child", she said.

Garcia was one of countless strangers who found out about Crystal through a Facebook post - and answered the girl's Christmas wish. The teacher posted the letter to social media on December 13 in the hope of inspiring charity for families in need.

"Unfortunately, there are other students that as part of their needs they included food, towels, blankets, pillows, bed, clothes, shoes and a stove", the teacher told ABC News.

"This makes me very sad".

"As a teacher it breaks my heart when I hear [students] ask for things that we sometimes take for granted", Espiricueta wrote on Facebook.

"It made me realize that some of these kids don't have anything to stay warm at night, or they sleep on the floor", Espiricueta said. "Some of my students were not even excited about Christmas because they know that their parents cannot afford to buy a Christmas tree or gifts for them".

The letter inspired people to donate to the students in need at the elementary school.

KRGV reports the school has received all kinds of donations, including hundreds of blankets through a blanket drive.
