The pots for Champions League last 16, first and second leg dates

Atletico, losing finalists to Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016, were ultimately made to pay for two draws against Champions League debutants Qarabag, after both Roma and Chelsea saw off the Azeris twice.

The Red Devils finished as winners of their group, with their final fixture being a 2-1 triumph over CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford.

In the round of 16, teams can not be drawn against sides who they faced in the group stages.

If Liverpool do secure top spot that makes things even trickier for Chelsea. As the other four English sides won their groups, and Chelsea can not be drawn against Roma again, it leaves only three possible opponents: Barcelona, Besiktas or Paris Saint-Germain - meaning they have a very high chance of a tough tie.

Liverpool (if top): Bayern Munich, Juventus, Basel, Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli, Porto or RB Leipzig.

It means Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham all won their groups, while Chelsea came second in Group C. Real Madrid are also confirmed to finish second and will be joined by three more sides - now scheduled to be Sevilla, Shakhtar Donetsk and Porto.

However, the Premier League heavyweights can only face Barcelona, PSG or Besiktas in the next round.

The five-time European champion joined fellow former winners Barcelona and Manchester United, plus big spenders Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City among the seeded teams on Wednesday. That means Chelsea can not draw Roma, Manchester United can not be drawn to play against Basel and Tottenham will not be up against their Group H opponents Real Madrid.

Manchester United and Juventus qualified for the Champions League knockout stage on Tuesday, while three-time runners-up Atletico Madrid bowed out of the competition.

Roma: Bayern Munich, FC Basel, FC Porto, Real Madrid, Sevilla, Shakhtar Donetsk.
