Things You Need to Know About the Manipuri Marvel Mirabai Chanu

Mirabai made waves while qualifying for the Rio Olympics by breaking two national records - the first, a 12-year-old record held by veteran weightlifter Kunjarani Devi when she lifted 192kg at the selection trials; and then her own record by lifting 85kg in the snatch event.

Mirabai, 23, lifted an impressive total of 194kg in the women's 48kg to win the gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championship in Anaheim, USA today to win the gold medal. She qualified for the 2018 Commonwealth Games after winning Gold at the Commonwealth Senior weightlifting Championship in Australia.

In this World Weightlifting Championship in Anaheim, Thailand's Sukcharoen Thunya won the silver medal with a total lift of 193, while Segura Ana Iris bagged the brozne with 182kg. Two decades earlier, Olympic bronze medallist Karnam Malleshwari had managed to win the top prize in worlds twice - in 1994 and 1995 respectively. He further wished her all success in her future endeavours. He said Chanu has brought laurels for the State and the Country, and that her gold has only reaffirmed Manipur's place in the sporting world. India is so proud of you.

Seeing the tricolor in the podium while picking up the honour for the country, tears of joy rolled down the Champion's cheeks.

Mirabai Chanu's achievement got her high praises from the whole nation including the President of India, PM Modi, sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.

The World Championships gold is another reason to mark her as one of India's brightest prospects in the discipline. She later admitted she suffered a bad bout of nerves, which led her to successfully lift just one of her six attempts - three in snatch and three in clean and jerk.
