Three Finalists Named For 2017 Heisman Trophy

Three Finalists Named For 2017 Heisman Trophy

A year ago, Jackson, Louisville's quarterback, became the youngest ever victor of the Heisman, awarded annually to college football's most outstanding player.

Mayfield threw just five interceptions all year (and none after December 4) and shone brightest in the Sooners' biggest games, taking the drama out of the Heisman race with weeks to spare. And what's a good campaign without a little political slander?

Jackson, born in Pompano Beach and a graduate of Boynton Beach High, is again a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He's a big part of the reason Mayfield was so upset Oklahoma wasn't a finalist for the Joe Moore Award, given to the nation's best O-line. Oklahoma plays Georgia (12-1) in the Rose Bowl semifinal on January 1.

Mayfield is the fourth OU football player to win the award since it was first given out in 1998. Mayfield leads the nation in efficiency rating at 203.76 and has thrown for 4,340 yards and 41 touchdowns.

"The guys I've been playing with and the coaches I've had, especially Coach (Lincoln) Riley, we've had success but this year's been a special one", Mayfield said in the statement.

Louisville's Jackson will attempt to become just the second player to win the Heisman twice. I wouldn't be here without those guys and I'm happy I get to enjoy this trip with two of my teammates, even though I think all of them deserve to be here with us. Ohio State running back Archie Griffin became the first player to do so when he won the award in 1974 and '75.

But Jackson has had less time in the national spotlight this fall, with Louisville going 8-4 (4-4 in ACC play) en route to a bid in the TaxSlayer Bowl.

Jackson, last year's Heisman victor, leads the nation in total offense at 411 yards per game. At the end of the day, it's a quarterback's trophy unless a running back does something unforeseen. He also scored 17 touchdowns.

San Diego State's Rashaad Penny leads the nation in rushing (168.9) and all-purpose yards (224.8). Penny had big games against Pac-12 teams Stanford and Arizona State early in the season but was held in check by San Diego State's top Mountain West rivals, Fresno State and Boise State.
