Two killed in knife attack at Tokyo shrine

At around 8:35 p.m., police received a distress call about a woman wielding a sword violently on a road near Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine.

One man and one woman were killed and two others injured on Thursday night in a knife attack in Tokyo, local police said.

Later, the attacker's girlfriend, reportedly in her 30s, and who was at the entrance of the shrine at the time, chased the fleeing chauffeur for more than 100 metres before slashing him on the shoulder with a sword, police sources told state-owned broadcaster NHK.

Nagako Tomioka, 58, chief priestess of Tomioka Hachimangu shrine in Tokyo, was attacked by Shigenaga Tomioka, 56, as she got out of a vehicle on Thursday evening. He then slashed his chest in taking his life, police said. The motive was unclear, though Japanese media reported there may have been a feud between the priest and her brother.

The attack began around 8:25 p.m., when Shigenaga Tomioka attacked his sister with a Japanese sword as she exited her auto on the shrine grounds.

Shigenaga Tomioka, 56, and an accomplice were hiding behind her house, police said. Japanese priests generally live on the grounds of their shrines or temples. The driver suffered injuries to his right arm and chest, though they were not life-threatening.

Authorities suspect a row between the brother and sister over the shine's chief priest position had prompted the apparent murder-suicide.

A knife and a Japanese sword with blood on were found later near the site.

The Tomioka Hachimangu shrine, established in 1627, is known for its Fukagawa Hachiman summer festival and its golden portable shrines.
