U.S. to maintain Russian Federation sanctions until it withdraws from Ukraine, Tillerson says

Moscow faces widespread allegations that it interfered in the USA presidential election and was behind a wave of destructive global hacking attacks.

Russia's foreign minister called on Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) countries to strengthen efforts to ensure the safety of the internet on Thursday.

"We confirm our proposal to establish in the (OSCE) secretariat a separate anti-drug structure", Lavrov said. "It stands as the single most hard obstacle to us renormalising the relationship with Russian Federation, which we badly would like to do".

"Russia's aggression in Ukraine remains the biggest threat to European security", he said on Wednesday.

Tillerson said the United Nations forces should also have peacekeeping powers, including the authority to disarm Russian-backed separatists.

Moscow has denied supplying arms and fighters.

In his speech to the gathering, Tillerson went even further in spelling out Russia's involvement in the conflict and the consequences it faced than he had the day before in Brussels.

Tillerson also accused the Russian military of actively fighting in eastern Ukraine, saying they are "arming, leading, training and fighting alongside anti-government forces".

"Russia has long resisted a peacekeeping force, but they have agreed now", Tillerson told reporters after talks with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies in Brussels.

In his speech, he referred to the 2015 Minsk ceasefire agreement, brokered in the Belarussian capital by France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine.

He said the Kremlin's annexation of Crimea in 2014 that sparked the Ukraine crisis has been the reason why the relationship between the two countries have soured.
