UC Berkeley law student has testy exchange with AG Jeff Sessions

In response, Sessions noted that more fatal accidents are now caused by drugs than by alcohol, and he said the American Medical Association "is crystal clear" that "marijuana is not a healthy substance". "The Second Amendment - you're aware of that - guarantees the right of people to keep and bear arms. That's my basic philosophical view about it".

Sessions said the Justice Department was going to hold a Pride observance the following week (it did, honoring Gavin Grimm, a transgender student whose lawsuit against his school district was undermined by the withdrawal of the guidance) and said he didn't know about the lack of a Pride proclamation from the White House.

"As I'm standing here I'm thinking about Philando Castile and Michael Brown and any of those other folks who have fallen victim to excessive force", said UC Berkeley law student Sean Litteral.

When Sessions said he cared about keeping all communities safe, the intern responded, "I grew up in one of these communities. I don't." Sessions, rather dismissively, called her "Dr. Whatever-Your-Name-Is", and told her "you can write the AMA and see why they think otherwise". "I grew up in a projects to a single mother". The student said that the people they were afraid of were not necessarily their neighbors, but the police.

"Well, that may be the view in Berkeley, but it's not the view of most places in the country".

The intern went on to explain that this wasn't just an issue at Berkeley, and he pointed an incident in Columbus, Ohio, where an officer was caught on video stomping on a restrained suspect's head.

"We've got a situation in which we need to confront violent crime in America in cities that have abandoned traditional police activities like Baltimore and Chicago, [where] murder rates have surged - particularly in poor neighborhoods", he added.

In it, Sessions fields tough questions from an intern corps that clearly does not see eye-to-eye with his DOJ's policies and priorities, from policing and LGBTQ protections, to marijuana policy. He said the administration is "fully committed to maintaining civil rights for every American".
