United Nations political chief to visit North Korea

United Nations Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman will arrive on an official visit to North Korea on Tuesday, UN Spokesman Farhan Haq told TASS, commenting on a report by the Kyodo news agency.

The UN political chief is heading to North Korea on a rare four-day visit at the invitation of the government for a wide-ranging discussion on policy issues "of mutual interest and concern".

A meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is not on the agenda so far, and UN?Secretary General Antonio Guterres does not have any plans to travel to North Korea, Dujarric said.

Feltmen has confirmed meetings with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho and Vice Minister Pak Myong Guk. South Korea and the USA are also holding massive joint aerial drills over the peninsula.

The exercises were conducted a week after Pyongyang said it had tested its most advanced long-range ballistic missile capable of reaching the United States.

At a UN security council meeting last week to discuss the missile test, the United States ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, said that while Washington did not seek war with Pyongyang, "if war comes, make no mistake, the North Korean regime will be utterly destroyed".

Though there are no plans for Guterres to visit the North at this point, Dujarric reiterated that the United Nations chief's "good offices are always available should all the parties involved request it", regarding the possibility of mediation efforts in response to regional tensions emanating from the North Korean nuclear issue.

The last United Nations undersecretary-general for political affairs to visit North Korea was B. Lynn Pascoe in February 2010.
