United Nations says Saudi-led coalition raids in Yemen kill 109 civilians

United Nations says Saudi-led coalition raids in Yemen kill 109 civilians

Jamie McGoldrick said on Thursday that those killed include at least 54 in airstrikes on a market in the western province of Taiz, and 14 people from the same family in an airstrike on a farm in the coastal Hodeida province.

Almost 70 civilians were killed on a single day within this week in airstrikes across war-ravaged Yemen, the UN's Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said in a report on Thursday.

The Arab coalition intervened in support of the internationally recognised government in March 2015 after the Shiite Huthis took over the capital Sanaa and much of Yemen.

Locals confirmed that the attacks on the marketplace killed at least 25 civilians, including children, and wounded at least 30 others.

The Saudi-led coalition bombing Yemen responded to an announcement by the International Committee of the Red Cross that cholera cases in the country had reached one million suspected cases, saying it was exaggerated.

According to the medical journal The Lancet, the impact of war on Yemen's densely packed civilian neighbourhoods has been devastating.

Mr McGoldrick said on Thursday that he was deeply disturbed by the mounting civilian casualties caused by "escalated and indiscriminate attacks".

Saba also reported that scores of people were injured after four air strikes targeted a public protest in Arhab district against US President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"This absurd war. has only resulted in the destruction of the country and the incommensurate suffering of its people, who are being punished as part of a futile military campaign by both sides", United Nations resident coordinator Jamie McGoldrick said in a statement.

"As the conflict in which civilians have borne the brunt marks 1,000 days, I once again remind all parties that it has no military solution".
