US Defence Secretary James Mattis to visit Pakistan on December 4

As part of a four-nation tour, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis will visit Pakistan next week.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is traveling overseas again, with stops in North Africa, the Middle East and Pakistan on his agenda over the next few days.

Mattis will be visiting Pakistan for the first time after his appointment as the Secretary of Defense past year.

During his visit to Pakistan, the USA secretary of defence will meet with Prime Minister Khaqan Abbasi and Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, according to the statement, and seek support for defeating militants.

Besides Pakistan, the defence chief would also be visiting Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait 'to re-affirm the enduring USA commitment to partnerships in the Middle East, West Africa and South Asia, ' the statement added.

Voanews reported that, "The trip comes as the USA military shifts its focus in the Middle East, after having driven out the Islamic State militant group from its self-declared caliphate in Iraq and Syria".

Mattis' first meeting would be with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and Defense Minister Gen Sedki Sobhi today (Saturday).

Mattis said he will deliver his condolences for the attack.

The US secretary of defence will meet PM Abbasi and COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa during the visit. Trump while announcing the strategy had criticised Pakistan for providing safe havens to terrorists.

"The Secretary outlined the United States' new South Asia Strategy and the vital role that Pakistan can play in working with the United States and others to facilitate a peace process in Afghanistan that can bring stability and security to the region", said the statement from the U.S. embassy.
