Woman Arrested on Southwest Plane For What She Told Fellow Passengers

The passenger had disabled a bathroom smoke detector and was caught smoking a cigarette by a flight attendant, the airline told Business Insider.

The clip ends with fellow passengers stepping up to help flight attendants calm the irate woman.

Reporter: "You were saying some pretty threatening things like you were going to kill everybody on the plane".

Southwest explained: 'Our crew in command of Flight 2943 travelling from Portland on Saturday afternoon safely landed on-time in Sacramento following an in-flight disturbance.

This enraged the woman, reportedly leading her to rip an oxygen mask out of the ceiling as crew forced her to put out the smoke and return back to her seat.

She was arrested and escorted to law enforcement upon landing, Southwest Airlines confirmed.

When asked, Curbelo said she didn't know why she made the threat.

Southwest Airlines said Sunday that a passenger had a bit of a tantrum.

Curbelo told CBS13 from jail that she needed to smoke because she was experiencing anxiety.

'Our reports from flight attendants indicate a customer violated federal laws by both smoking on board an aircraft and by tampering with a smoke detector in an aircraft restroom.

The incredible incident happened on a plane flying from Portland to Sacramento, US, a journey that takes around an hour and 23 minutes.

She's booked in the Sacramento county jail for making criminal threats. She said she smoked because she was anxious, but she did not provides and explanation for the threat she is accused of making, or what she was anxious about.

The pilot declared an emergency to receive priority treatment from air traffic control handlers, while the onboard crew "handled the situation" until Curbelo's arrest after the plane landed, according to a Southwest statement. Saturday's flight had 136 passengers and a five-person crew.
