YouTube to hire 10000 people to root out bad content

YouTube to hire 10000 people to root out bad content

Google is to deploy a staff of 10,000 to hunt down extremist content on its YouTube platform following recent criticism, the video-sharing site's chief executive told Britain's Daily Telegraph Tuesday.

YouTube is taking stern actions to protect its users against inappropriate content with stricter policies and larger enforcement teams, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said in a blog post.

"Human reviewers remain essential to both removing content and training machine learning systems because human judgement is critical to making contextualised decisions on content", she said. Some of the videos highlighted also featured underage children in suggestive situations, and attracted comments from sexual predators.

In August, YouTube was criticised for deleting video evidence relating to potential war crimes in Syria as part of its work to remove terrorist content and propaganda from the platform.

"Our advances in machine learning let us now take down almost 70 percent of violent extremist content within eight hours of upload and almost half of it in two hours and we continue to accelerate that speed.", said Susan.

Wojcicki said they have developed a "computer-learning" technology that helps them to quickly identify and then remove radical content on a site that has hundreds of minutes of video uploaded each minute, according to the report.

The official added that the company was also fighting against aggression in comments, as well as cooperating with a number of child safety groups, such as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, in order to ensure fight against predatory behavior. The website also shut down the comment sections of more than 625,000 videos.

She said the company will be keeping a closer eye on which channels and videos should be eligible for advertising.

The four big tech companies said Ask.fm, Cloudinary, Instagram, which is also owned by Facebook, Justpaste.it, LinkedIn, which is owned by Microsoft, Oath, and Snap Inc. were going to begin participating in the shared terrorist content hash database.
