9 charged in connection with hazing death of FSU student

Two Bay area men were among the nine students charged in the hazing death of a Florida State University fraternity pledge Andrew Coffey, News Channel 8 has confirmed.

All are facing charges of "College Hazing-Cause Injury or Death". Autopsy report found he had a blood alcohol level five times the legal limit.

A pledge attempted to awaken Coffey to no avail. "Investigators intensely employed hours of investigative research, combed through several pieces of physical evidence, and conducted dozens of interviews with the assistance of the Florida State University Police Department", a police statement said.

On Nov. 3, 2017, Coffey, 20, a junior, was found at an off-campus house following a night of partying, according to police. The party included consuming liquor straight from the bottle.

Coffey attended the "Big Brother Night" at an off-campus party on November 2, 2017, to celebrate the "reveal" of fraternity members assigned to each of the pledges as their mentors or "big brothers", according to court documents. "Hopefully, this investigation and its outcome will prevent another tragedy from occurring". "Troubled that our son died alone in a room full of people", they wrote.

The indefinite suspension of Greek Life activities remains in place, and we continue to mourn Andrew Coffey's loss.

While interviewees said that pledges were not physically forced to drink, investigators believe the pressure from leaders and fraternity members "led to an expectation of abusive drinking or the pledges could face possible ostracism by the group". "They presented numerous same answers as each other and volunteered much self-serving information without being asked", it said.

Three days after Coffey's death, Florida State responded by indefinitely suspending its fraternities and sororities.

Grand jury records from last month state that one fellow pledge waited before calling 911, and that members of Pi Kappa Phi "were more concerned about getting in trouble than they were about trying to save Coffey's life". He wanted "to go out and see the world", she said.
