AAP welcomes SC decision for new SIT to probe 186 anti-Sikh

Just five months after examining the justification for closing 241 anti-Sikh riot cases, the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday ordered re-investigation into 186 cases, closed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Close to 3,000 people were massacred in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that were sparked by the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.

The apex court to pass orders on Thursday regarding names of retired and serving IPS officers who could be included in the three-member committee.

The court had noted that the eyewitnesses had not been examined in those cases and there was a "travesty" since the investigation was not done properly.

The Bench after perusal of the supervisory committee report observed that it is imperative to constitute a fresh SIT to probe into the pending cases.

Almost 3,000 Sikhs were killed in Delhi and other places in the anti-Sikh riots in 1984. The remaining nine were being investigated by the SIT, including two being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation, the government had said.

186 cases of the 1984 Sikh riots matter will be re-investigated.

The SIT is headed by Pramod Asthana, an IPS officer of 1986 batch, and has Rakesh Kapoor, a retired district and sessions judge, and Kumar Gyanesh, an additional deputy commissioner of Delhi Police, as its members.

On August 16 previous year, the court made a decision to independently examine the investigation records of the 241 cases and confirm that there was nothing more to do on them.

Kahlon, a member of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, had sought the court's direction for setting up a fresh SIT to ensure speedy justice to riots victims.
