Andy Murray to miss Australian Open with hip injury

Andy Murray to miss Australian Open with hip injury

Alarm bells were ringing for Murray when he made his long-awaited return to court and lost 6-2 to world number 20 Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in a one-set exhibition match in Abu Dhabi last week.

He played a one-set exhibition match last week in Abu Dhabi but did not look 100 per cent and, having already pulled out of the Brisbane International, he has now chose to sit out the season's first Grand Slam.

Former No. 1-ranked Murray, a three-time major victor, has not played a competitive match since Wimbledon.

The victor of 11 ATP Tour titles, he made the fourth round of the Australian Open past year, losing in five sets to eventual champion Roger Federer.

The 36-year-old American won her 23rd grand slam singles title at Melbourne Park last year before taking time off to give birth to a daughter. "I'll be flying home shortly to assess all the options".

Murray, the 2012 Brisbane International champion, posted a photo of himself as a child and said the "little kid inside me just wants to play tennis and compete". Murray is now set to make a decision if he will continue to rest and rehab his injured hip or undergo a surgery - an option he has been hoping to avoid.

"However, this is something I may have to consider but let's hope not".

Former world number one Novak Djokovic's participation is uncertain as well.

The 2018 Australian Open begins on 15 January.

"We are fully aware that Andy has been going through a hard period with his hip and that he's done everything possible to prepare for the Australian summer", said tournament organiser Craig Tiley.

Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev wishes nothing but good to an injured tennis superstar Andy Murray.

Australia has been a happy hunting ground for Konta, who followed last year's Sydney triumph with a run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, where she also reached the final four in 2016. It's not dissimilar from previous year...
