Angelique Kerber Eases into Australian Open Semis

The women's semifinals were determined earlier Wednesday, when top-ranked Simona Halep recovered from an early break to win nine straight games in a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 6 Karolina Pliskova, and 2016 Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber routed U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys 6-1, 6-2.

Making a mockery of the 21st seeding she landed after a miserable 2017, Kerber outplayed Keys in nearly every facet of the 51-minute match.

The German tennis star is the 2016 champion in women's singles at the Grand Slam event. She made her Grand Slam breakthrough here in 2015, blasting her way to the semifinals with wins over, among others, and.

For Keys, the 17th seed who hadn't dropped a set to reach the quarter-finals, it's back to the drawing board after another big-match choke - she capitulated 6-3, 6-0 to Sloane Stephens in the final at Flushing Meadows previous year.

On her quarter-final form, Kerber should be feared.

The American 17th seed needed a strong start to the second, but Keys - the 2017 US Open runner-up - instead fell 3-0 behind.

Keys might have used identical words to describe her game plan, but she was unable to come anywhere near implementing it. Keys' serve was the most fearsome weapon on the court - at least coming into the match - but she had no aces and four double faults. Although Kerber's recovery has been remarkable, it seems like this match will be Halep's for the taking. You never know with Karolina because she has insane good shots sometimes and also the serve.

Her semifinal opponent will be top-seeded Simona Halep of Romania, a 6-3, 6-2 victor over sixth-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the last quarterfinal.

"She played really well", Keys said afterwards. They inspire me just being cool. I think she just plays always good against me, so I don't know where is really the problem. "But more than anything, it's just focusing on the match in front of me and not thinking about, 'Oh, I could make the final.' It's more, 'I have a quarterfinal, ' and that's what I need to focus on and not look past that".

What a year it has been. she started the season in Hopman Cup and along with Angelique Kerber, provided one of the matches of the tournament in Perth. Therefore, I'm going with the World No.1 to prove her credentials and get the win.

Now we have a new World No. 1 who is dying to have that pressure on her shoulders. I know her pretty well.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) Serena Williams is ready to return to competition for the first time in more than a year, a little more than five months after giving birth. Two points away from exiting the tournament at one point, Kerber had to summon all her physical strength and experience to overcome an opponent who finally showed signs of exhaustion at the start of the third set.

Remarkably, as if destined to meet in the winner-takes-all shootout, Halep and Wozniacki also both saved match points in huge first-week frights to keep their Open dreams alive.

Vithun: This match really could go either way, as I do not recall the last time there was such a defensive semi-final line-up. Halep is 4-1 against Kerber on outdoor hard court. "I want to go there and give everything I have - like I did the few last matches". With Berdych serving for the first set in the ninth game, Federer had challenged a line call. "It's not a matter of the coach is bad or the player is bad".
