Arsenal want £10m for Europa League midfielder

Valencia have reportedly lodged a £12 million offer to sign Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin, but West Ham United and Crystal Palace remain interested as the Gunners are "ready to sell" in January.

Coquelin was omitted from Arsenal's FA Cup squad to face Nottingham Forest on Sunday and well-connected Arsenal journalists at the Daily Mirror and Daily Mail claim that he is for sale.

This would be a move that seemingly makes sense for both the player and the club.

Coquelin, 26, has started just one Premier League game this season and has had to settle for a bit-part role, with Mohamed Elneny preferred in an anchoring role. Though Coquelin signed a long-term contract extension nearly a year ago exactly, frustration over his diminishing role is understandable.

The Toon prefer to play a shorter, more methodical approach under Rafa Benitez, and that would suit Coquelin down to a tee as he likes to help his side keep possession with short passing while marshalling the space between defence and midfield. And it's not like his presence turned Arsenal into a strong defensive unit.

Coquelin has consistently drawn the ire of Arsenal fans the last few years, and while I agree he is out of his depth as a regular starter, the blame for that should be pointed at Wenger. Wenger obviously didn't trust him but when he finally gave the Frenchman a chance he performed magnificently and suddenly he was the first name on the teamsheet.
