Australian Open: Nick Kyrgios coasts to second round with easy win

Australia's top hope of ending a 40-year wait for a home-grown victor at Melbourne Park eased into the second round with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 win over the world number 100, helped by 16 aces.

Kyrgios' Australian compatriot Bernard Tomic failed to qualify for the Australian Open, the first time he has missed the event in nine years.

Kyrgios fired 16 aces and wasn't broken once on his own serve, but the 22-year-old's return was equally impressive as he got 76 per cent of his returns in play.

Kyrgios' four matches on the way to the Brisbane International title means he's played more competitive tennis than most of his Open rivals.

There was an early warning for Kyrgios when umpire Fergus Murphy took exception to his admonishment of the crowd for calling out, and a debate ensued between the pair at the changeover.

"All you have to do is say "please be quiet when the player is serving", Kyrgios told the umpire. He has been on the Tour for a long time and won a lot of matches.

It always shaped as a tough opener for Stephens, who hasn't won a tour-level match since her Grand Slam breakthrough triumph at the U.S. Open a year ago and facing a player ranked No. 34, two spots off being seeded for the first major of the season.

In her first match at the Australian Open since a Williams sister was guaranteed to win the title, Venus Williams lost in the first round to Belinda Bencic and ensured it can not happen in 2018.

"I don't think I played as well as I did in Brisbane. He's a tough competitor", said Kyrgios. But I definitely feel more confident on that court now. We're at the Australian Open, man. "I've been hitting on Rod Laver the last couple days". The match took 15 games to be decided.

"Sloane she plays so well, won the U.S. Open - everyone knows - she's a great player", Zhang said.

"All I thought about was competing and I did that well". She returned on a roll, winning the next six points to hold serve and then clinch the set.

She did not allow Falconi a single service hold, tallying a mammoth 13 break points in seven games.

"I'm not putting expectations on myself and no-one in my team does", she said.

"I feel for me there's pressure wherever I go".
