'Baby Brain' A Real Phenomenon For Pregnant Women

'Baby Brain' A Real Phenomenon For Pregnant Women

Australian research has finally proved what many expecting mums could have already told you - from losing your keys, forgetting an appointment, to not remembering where you parked your vehicle - a bad case of "Baby brain" can easily derail your day, and definitely exists.

The evidence shows that baby brain is not a myth and pregnant women really do have worse overall cognitive functioning which fully manifests in the third trimester.

"Baby brain" was found to be most prominent during the third trimester of pregnancy, where functionality and memory is "significantly reduced", the Daily Telegraph reported.

Prof Byrne said more research was needed to understand the effect of baby brain on everyday life, which they hoped to answer in a current Deakin University study involving Victorian women.

The study published in the Medical Journal of Australia found memory performance declined during the early stages of pregnancy, but the decline either slowed or stopped from mid-pregnancy.

"Small reductions in performance. will be noticeable to the pregnant women themselves and perhaps by those close to them, manifesting mainly as minor memory lapses (eg. forgetting or failing to book medical appointments)".

As for the reason behind baby brain?

"More significant consequences ... are less likely", she says.

Symptoms include forgetfulness, poor concentration and feeling they are "not as sharp" as normal.

"It's certainly a valid thing that women experience and report, and we know objectively now that there are these changes that occur", she said.

The most notable change researchers observed was the decline in memory performance, particularly during the third trimester.

She added: 'It's not something that is at a level that we need to worry about, it is not going to affect how a woman does her job and day-to-day life'.

That study is using neuroscience techniques to track changes in cognition before, during and after pregnancy.

Up to 80 per cent of pregnant women report a decline in memory, difficulty reading, confusion, poor concentration, increased absent-mindedness and reduced motor co-ordination.
