Baby Indian girl weighing 400 grams at birth survives

One of the world's smallest babies to ever survive weighs the same as a bar of chocolate. On June 15, 2017, Seeta had to undergo premature C-section after her blood pressure became uncontrollable, The Hindu reported.

The youngster, from Rajasthan, India, who measured just 8.6 inches long, is thought to be the smallest surviving baby ever born in Asia.

Dr Sunil Janged, chief neo-natologist added: 'When the baby was born, we were uncertain of what could happen. According to the doctors at the Jivanta Children's Hospital, Udaipur, her tiny feet were only slightly bigger than a fingernail.

As Seeta was the only hope for her parents who came from a poor financial background and had yearned for a child for 35 years, the hospital made a decision to bear 75% of the cost of the treatment for the premature baby.

"Babies born this small have an extremely poor function of all body organs which include lungs, heart, brain, kidneys, intestine, skin, adrenals etc. and all of them need support for the survival of the baby", Dr. Pradeep Suryawanshi, Senior Professor of Neonatology from Bharti University in Pune, India, said, Times Now reported.

Hospital director Dr Sunil Janged added: "We chose to save the life of the baby and offer her necessary medical care and attention because we wanted to send out a message that a girl child must be protected".

"She was struggling to breathe, so was immediately put on advanced respiratory support ventilator to expand her tiny, immature lungs".

Within seven weeks little Manushi was able to start taking her mother's breast milk. She can not be fed adequately due to the immaturity of the gut. The baby was finally discharged from the hospital on Thursday. Paediatricians attending on her started with parenteral nutrition, giving all essential nutrients directly into blood circulation.

Her parents and doctors fought to keep her alive and healthy and their efforts appeared to have paid off. By her fourth month, she was able to drink from spoon. "Her organs are functioning perfectly and she is looking so handsome and so active", gushed Dr Janged when speaking to us.

The Indian state of Rajasthan is notorious for its gender ratio that is unnaturally skewed in favour of boys. The 2011 India census data indicates there were 914 girls for every 1,000 boys under age 7, according to the BBC. The hospital also wanted the cost reduction to send a positive message out to the local community. Rajasthan where the girls, still considered a burden, are thrown into the trash immediately after birth or are left in the orphanage.

She was born to a couple who was married for 35 years.
