Biden on Trump's remarks: 'It's not what a president should believe'

The Botswana government has issued a statement criticising US president Donald Trump for calling Africa "shithole countries" due to excessive immigration from the block.

After worldwide outrage, Trump sought to backpedal his remarks, first claiming on Twitter 15 hours after The Washington Post broke the news that he didn't use the term "shithole countries", and later tweeting that Haiti was not included in his list of "shithole countries".

In a series of tweets posted a few minutes ago, Trump had argued: "The so-called bipartisan DACA deal presented yesterday to myself and a group of Republican Senators and Congressmen was a big step backwards".

Trump on Friday denied saying "anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country". The largest is El Salvadoran, the second is Honduran and the third is Haitian and when I mentioned that fact to him he said "Haitians? Probably should record future meetings - unfortunately, no trust!" Trump and Congress are looking at a deal to help "Dreamers", immigrants protected under the DACA program.

In addition, the president singled out Haiti, telling lawmakers that immigrants from that country must be left out of any deal, these people said.

Trump made the assertion Thursday during an Oval Office meeting on immigration.

As soon as Trump's comments were reported, people took the "president" to task.

He later added, "Why do we need more Haitians?"

Trump cancelled the program past year.

Trump and the lawmakers had been discussing a visa lottery program that annually allows as many as 50,000 citizens from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the USA to reside in the United States legally, as well as programs that temporarily protect certain immigrants from deportation that the White House is ending.

Much like many episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live, nowadays, the titular host began a segment by saying, "The president had another preposterous day today".

The White House did not immediately respond to questions about the president's tweet.

Other lawmakers view his comments as a setback and say he makes it hard for anyone to come to an agreement.

"He used these vile and vulgar comments, calling the nations they come from shitholes", Durbin told reporters Friday morning.

However, Trump claimed in his tweet that the alleged quotes did not accurately reflect what he said during the meeting.

"The President must apologize to both the American people and the nations he so wantonly maligned", Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, stated on Thursday.
