Bluefin tuna sells for $320000 at New Year auction in Tokyo

The owner of an worldwide sushi restaurant has shelled out over Dollars 300,000 for a single bluefin tuna and said that he was very happy with the result.

Tuna fish brokers check the quality of a bluefin tuna in the final year-opening auction at Tsukiji Market in Tokyo, Japan, 05 January 2018.

The new year auction prices are way above the usual price paid for bluefin tuna at Tsukiji, which at the end of the year was JPY 4,500/kg. Despite forking out such a giant amount for fish, Onodera failed to beat the record price that has been paid for a premier species of a tuna fish.

Hiroshi Onodera, the owner and president of "Ginza Onodera", a sushi chain which has stores around the world including the likes of big cities such as London and NY reportedly paid Rs 36.45 million yen (Japanese currency) which is equivalent to £238,000. The all-time record was 155 million yen, or just over £1m, spent on tuna in 2013.

In the final New Year's auction at Tokyo's famed Tsukiji fish market on Friday, the owner of an global sushi restaurant shelled out more than $300,000 for a prime bluefin tuna and said he was "very happy" with the result. This means that the fish came at a steep price of around 90,000 yen per kg. "This is especially true because it's the past year in Tsukiji".

"I've tried to win in the auction since past year, so I'm really happy", Mr Onodera told the agency.

Reportedly, Tsukiji fish market, which is the world's largest fish market and among Tokyo's most popular tourist sites, is set to shift later this year. Stalls at the auction are laden with exotic species of fish and fresh sushi.

Tuna is in high demand among top-restaurateurs and caterers due to the swelling popularity of sushi around the world but, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WFF), bluefin populations have declined severely in recent decades as a result of overfishing and illegal fishing. He adds that if countries continue to exceed their catch limits, then the very survival of the species will be threatened.
