British Lawmakers Back Brexit Legislation, Tougher Tests Yet to Come

The government has faced a battle to get the bill through the House of Commons, with a number of amendments put forward. It suffered an embarrassing defeat last month after a group of 11 rebel Conservative MPs voted against the government to ensure Parliament secured a meaningful vote on the terms of the final Brexit deal.Since then, the European Union and Britain have agreed to move onto the with the next round of talks focusing on a transitional deal before moving onto future trade and security relations between the parties.

A total of 48 Labour members voted to stay in the Single Market and Customs Union.

He also said: "On whatever basis we come out, there are bound to be adverse effects on the British economy if we create new barriers between ourselves and the biggest free market in the world". "If the British wish to find another way than Brexit, we are then ready to talk about it". However, a spokesman for May insisted yesterday: "We are leaving the European Union".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn suffered the embarrassment of having one in five of his own MPs rebel against him in a parliamentary vote over the terms of Brexit. "And it is my expectation that we would not ratify before that primary legislation has gone through", he said.

"Doesn't that demonstrate what a profound error it has been, especially when we know now that those decisions on those red lines were taken apparently with no assessment at all of the economic impact".

But the legislation will now face scrutiny from parliament's largely pro-EU upper house, where May's party does not have a majority, which will intensify efforts to force a re-run of a 2016 referendum, and water down or even stop the divorce.

Speaking during a debate on the EU Withdrawal Bill, Steve Baker said MPs and peers would have their say before the government signs off on a Brexit deal.

"This Bill is essential for preparing the country for the historic milestone of withdrawing from the European Union", said Mr Davis.

"It ensures that on day one we will have a statute book that works, delivering the smooth and orderly exit desired by people and businesses across the United Kingdom and being delivered by this government". Whereas before Christmas 11 Tory "mutineers" inflicted a humiliating defeat on the government over an amendment calling for a "meaningful vote" on May's Brexit deal, Tory whips never seriously feared a repeat of that experience at this stage of the bill.

The withdrawal bill attracted more than 500 amendments which were discussed during more than 80 hours of debate in the chamber. But Conservative MP Kenneth Clarke, a passionate europhile, said parliament's handling of the bill so far was "pathetic" and said he hoped the Lords would make an "enormous number of changes".

"By voting against this Bill, Labour have confirmed they only offer the most chaotic Brexit possible and it's ordinary working people who would pay the price".
