Bruno Mars' Mystery Guest Onstage at the 2018 Grammys Explained

Kendrick Lamar earned a standing ovation for his powerful, political opening performance at Sunday's Grammy Awards.

The 60th annual GRAMMY AWARDS returned to NEW YORK CITY for the first time in 15 years, and while rap ruled the night, it turned out JAY Z and KENDRICK LAMAR split the rap vote and allowed BRUNO MARS to sweep SONG ("That's What I Like"), RECORD ("24K Magic") and ALBUM OF THE YEAR ("24K Magic"), winning six GRAMMYs in all.

The Canadian engineer already has two Grammys on his mantel.

His win denied rappers Kendrick Lamar and Jay-Z the honour of becoming the first hip-hop artist in 14 years to win the coveted album of the year award.

Ed Sheeran, who could not attend the ceremony, won two prizes - best pop vocal performance for Shape Of You and best pop album for Divide.

Actress and singer Janelle Monae said the music business had to address issues of equal pay for women, abuse of power and harassment.

Lorde received just one nomination at this year's Grammys. The names of the victims were displayed behind them as they performed.

Logic ended the performance with a freestyle rap supporting the black community, women and immigrants. Behind an American flag and dancing, stomping paratroopers, Lamar thundered through the wise, wild rhymes that made his LP "Damn" a monster. "I just want to encourage everyone to support real music and real artists because everyone deserves the same shot".

Earlier in the ceremony, country singers Maren Morris, Eric Church and Brothers Osborne performed a moving rendition of Eric Clapton's Grammy winning "Tears in Heaven" as a tribute to the victims of a mass shooting at a music fest in Las Vegas a year ago.

Little Big Town, who sang their Taylor Swift-penned No. 1 hit "Better Man", also won best country duo/group performance with the song.

The late Carrie Fisher was also an early victor. But Lamar tipped his hat to the elder star, declaring "Jay for president!" as he collected the best rap album award.

"Those songs were written with nothing but joy. and that's all I wanted to bring with this album". While it's frustrating for fans, critics, and anyone who has seen how Lamar's music that can fuel and inspire social movements, these awards are nothing to him.

Best rock album: "A Deeper Understanding", The War on Drugs.
