California Mudslide Death Toll at 18 as Search for Missing Continues

Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown says the body of missing 25-year-old Morgan Christine Corey woman was found Saturday.

But the Montecito mudslide disaster is not an easy emergency to work.

"Floodwaters and mudslides destroyed 65 homes and damaged 462 other residences", spokeswoman Susan Klein-Rothschild said Thursday, according to CNN.

"It's really an overwhelming situation and we don't want to give an estimate that isn't accurate", said Colin Jones, a spokesman for the California Department of Transportation.

Rescue efforts are ongoing in Santa Barbara County in California, with search teams looking for people who were caught by massive mudslides that swamped houses and trapped cars on Tuesday.

Those who did not lose their homes have been told to leave for up to two weeks so they will not interfere with the rescue and recovery operation. Groups were supported by K-9 units, helicopters and bulldozers.

Rescuers have searched frantically for the missing after rivers of mud and boulders flooded through neighborhoods in and near Montecito, an affluent seaside community east of Santa Barbara, demolishing homes and leaving roads impassable. "It's just hard with getting some clear information".

Another emergency management official told the Los Angeles Times that county officials decided not to use the its push alert system to cellphones earlier for concern it might not be taken seriously. Ground usually held together by tree roots and smaller plants was suddenly just a mass of mud and boulders which residents describe as sounding like a freight train. Tige said he was checking the downspouts of his home around 3:30 a.m. when the storm picked up. The vast majority of those homes were in areas already designated by authorities as under mandatory or voluntary evacuation orders.

"Roy Rohter was a man of strong faith and a great friend of Catholic education", said Michael F. McLean, president of Thomas Aquinas College.

"Had we not gone over there, I don't think that kid would have [survived]", he added.
