Catherine Deneuve apologises to sex assault victims

In her letter Sunday, Deneuve said that during her long acting career she had of course "witnessed some situations that were more than delicate" or had heard from other actresses that "filmmakers have shamefully abused their power". I don't like this characteristic of our times whereby everyone feels they have the right to judge, to arbitrate, to condemn.

Catherine Deneuve apologized to the victims of sexual assault after she was criticized for signing an open letter against the #MeToo campaign.

Saying she felt a need to clarify her position, Deneuve writes, "Yes, I like freedom".

The letter was signed by 100 French women and said the flurry of accusations against powerful men since the Harvey Weinstein scandal has gone too far. "A time when simple denunciations on social networks generate punishment, resignation, and sometimes and often media lynching", she remarked.

Deneuve went on: 'I don't excuse anything. "I don't decide the guilt of these men because I am not qualified to do so", she says, as reported by Deadline.

Deneuve's follow-up missive seems, at least in part, created to distance herself from certain signees of the initial letter, specifically former radio host Brigitte Lahaie who, after the Le Monde letter was published, said in a televised debate that some women experience sexual pleasure from being raped.

Deneuve responded to the comment on Monday: "Saying on a TV channel that you can orgasm during a rape is worse than spitting in the face of all those who suffered from this crime". "Obviously nothing in the text claims that harassment is good", points out Deneuve.

Catherine also hit back at people who claimed she was not a feminist, pointing out she signed a 1971 manifesto defending abortion rights.

Deneuve said she stood by the statement that caused an worldwide outcry when it was published last week, but distanced herself from a number of other female signatories.

"Will we burn Sade in Pleiades? This climate of censorship leaves me speechless and anxious about the future of our societies", the actress explained.

'Abortion was punishable by criminal prosecution and imprisonment at the time, ' Deneuve reminded in her letter in Liberation. "They will have neither my gratitude nor my friendship". Refuting the letter's claim that being "fondled on a metro" was "a non-event", Schiappa said: "For a man to press himself up against a woman on the metro in this way is a sexual assault".
