CHAN 2018: Namibia Join Zambia In Quarters

Zambia and debutant Namibia have booked their tickets to the quarter-finals of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) on Thursday in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

Zambia beat Uganda 3-1 before shooting down Ivory Coast on Thursday to top Group B.

The final Group B games will be played on Monday when Zambia will face Namibia to decide the pool winners, while Cote d'Ivoire play Uganda for avoiding finishing bottom.

Augustine Mulenga netted both goals, scoring in the eighth minute and again in the 74th.

The Elephants will hope to pick up their first points of the tournament in their final group game against Uganda on Monday, 22 January.

Mulenga broke the deadlock after eight minutes when Lazarous Kambole recovered possession midway through the Elephants half setting up the Zanaco forward who fired past Ble Zadi for his second of the tournament.

Just over 10 minutes later Nsibambi outmuscled Vetunuavi Hambira before opening up his body for a shot which flew across goal and just wide of the far post, while Kazapua was soon in action again, once more denying Kyambadde from a snapshot.

Nekundi then scored the victor in time added on when Uganda failed to clear a ball and he received it from Itamunua Keimuine to fire home the victor.

Uganda dominated the first half but were largely frustrated and then saw Derrick Nsibambi miss a couple of good chances after the break.

Uganda appeared to be building up a head of steam, but on 76 minutes they were reduced to 10 men when defender Timothy Awany was harshly awarded a second caution and sent for an early shower.

Namibia took full advantage with Nekundi grabbing a dramatic victor to send them into the last eight, an impressive effort by the tournament debutants.
