Colorado homelessness programs to receive $30.6 million in federal grants

Colorado homelessness programs to receive $30.6 million in federal grants

San Diego County will receive more than $20 million from the federal government to reduce homelessness, U.S. Housing and Urban Development announced Thursday.

The extra grant will help the San Francisco government expand programs to provide housing for the homeless sleeping on the streets. "We know how to end homelessness and it starts with embracing a housing-first approach that relies upon proven strategies that offer permanent housing solutions".

The awards consider the cost of funding current programs, how well projects perform and housing costs.

An analysis from the liberal-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities said all three proposals would result in fewer people receiving housing help from the federal government and warned that some of those who can't get help will end up homeless.

Last month, HUD reported homelessness crept up in the USA, especially among individuals experiencing long-term chronic homelessness. Meanwhile, the report found, homelessness among families with children declined 5.4 percent nationwide. On the other hand, the report said, veteran homelessness decreased 4.1 percent and chronic homelessness decreased by 35.9 percent.

Los Angeles County - which has the nation's second-highest number of homeless people of any region at more than 55,000 - will receive about $122 million.

According to HUD's statistics, last year, there were nearly 554,000 homeless Americans, an increase of.7 percent from last year with much of that increase taking place in California.

The total awards in the Continuum of Care program is the most ever, though only slightly above collective grants of more than $1.9 billion in the last few years.

HUD estimates there were 553,742 persons experiencing homelessness on a single night nationally in 2017, and increase of.7 percent since a year ago.

HUD's mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all.
