Danish inventor 'is charged with journalist's murder'

Prosecutors in Denmark charged the inventor and private submarine-owner Peter Madsen for the murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall on Tuesday.

Jakob Buch-Jepsen said Peter Madsen, 46, either cut Wall's throat or strangled her after she boarded his self-built submarine for an interview in August previous year.

Madsen, who was arrested and detained shortly after Wall's disappearance in August, has admitted cutting up her body and dumping it at sea but has denied intentionally killing her.

Madsen is charged with murder as well as indecent handling of a corpse for the way he disposed of Wall's body.

The start of the trial has been set for March 8, with a verdict expected around April 25.

Prosecutors have previously said they believe Madsen killed Wall as part of a sexual fantasy.

Madsen and Wall had gone on a trip in Madsen's submarine on August 10.

Peter Madsen inside his submarine in 2008. Madsen was rescued from the sinking vessel and brought ashore, where he was picked up by police, but there was no trace of the missing journalist. He told authorities he had dropped Wall off on an island several hours after their voyage began.

Mr Madsen, 46, is a self-taught Danish aerospace engineer who was one of the founders of Copenhagen Suborbitals, which is dedicated to building submarines and manned spacecraft.

The inventor originally claimed he had dropped Wall off on land on the night of August 10, according to a police statement. Her head, legs and clothes were discovered in bags at sea in October, along with heavy metal objects created to take them to the ocean floor.

In the following days and months, parts of her body and clothing were found and recovered by police divers.
