Doctor: Trump 'fit for office,' could improve diet, exercise

He reported that the 6ft 3in president weighed in at 239lb, three pounds heavier than he was in September 2016, the last time Mr Trump revealed his weight to the public.

A weekly recap of the top political stories from The Globe, sent right to your email.

These measurements placed his Body Mass Index (BMI) at 29.9, putting him in the overweight category and just 0.1 units away from obese - a reading of 30 and above.

Dr Jackson said he prescribed a diet lower in fat and carbohydrates, and exercise.

Other information disclosed by the medical include Mr Trump's "healthy teeth and gums", a "regular heartbeat", and the fact that the president last had a colonoscopy in 2013 which showed no abnormalities.

While Mr Trump suffers from high cholesterol and has been encouraged to lose "10 or 15 pounds" over the next year or so, Dr Jackson said his cardiac health was "excellent" though his cholesterol was high.

"The president does take some Ambien (a sleeping pill) on occasion" when he travels overseas, Jackson said, adding: "Like we all do". He said that as far as he knows, Trump is not now engaging in any specific exercise at all.

But Dr Jackson said he likely just needed a drink of water.

He had a ideal score on a cognitive screening test.

The White House doctor announced today that Trump was administered the Montreal cognitive test and aced it with a score of 30 on 30.

President Donald Trump performed "exceedingly well" on cognitive screening during his recent physical examination.

"I've found no reason whatsoever to think that the president has any issues whatsoever with his thought process", he said.

He was said to be "fit for duty" for the rest of his term, and a second one should he be re-elected in 2020.

If you couldn't tell by his early-morning Twitter habits, the president doesn't really sleep all that much.

Nasreddine says the exam doesn't test for everything: it doesn't examine judgment, or personality, and in certain cases, he says, it can be duped by an extremely educated subject.

But on Wednesday morning Gupta, who did not examine Trump, took Jackson's data and declared that Trump has heart disease, prompting instant ridicule from people on both sides of the political aisle. Trump has said he obtained deferments during the Vietnam War for his college education and for bone spurs in his heels. Trump had appeared more interested in managing his diet than increasing his exercise, the doctor said.

Another journalist zeroed in on rumors that President Trump is a "germophobe".

"It's called genetics", Jackson said.

He doesn't seem overly stressed out.

"Is it healthy for the president to play golf?" another reporter asked.

When Trump comes back with clean psychological evaluation, that will be big news.

He also takes a cholesterol medicine and aspirin every day.

Like most men of his age, President Donald Trump has a common form of heart disease, relatively easy to address if he increases the dose of his cholesterol-lowering medication and makes necessary lifestyle changes.

Jackson said he made a decision to raise Trump's dosage of the cholesterol medicine after Friday's exam.
