ED summons Karti to record statement

Along with the raids at Chennai and Delhi premises of Karti Chidambaram, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday also raided senior Congress leader and former Union minister P Chidambaram's house in Delhi. His remarks came hours after the agency, which is investigating Karti, raided properties in Delhi and Chennai in connection with the INX Media case, reported news agency ANI.

The central probe agency had, on December 1 a year ago, conducted similar searches on the premises of a relative of Karti and others in this case. Also, the INX media owners Peter and Indrani are charged with the murder of their daughter Sheen Bora who bribes Chidambaram son Karti in 2007 for violating the approval FIPB. "The CBI FIR in the case has not been quashed and P Chidambaram had earlier appeared before the CBI in the case".

Addressing reporters in Delhi, Chidambaram said the ED has "no jurisdiction" to conduct the searches and that some of these properties belonged to him. Nothing was recovered from Karti's house during the raid.

Sources say that the ED made a decision to conduct the raids since Karti failed to appear before the agency on 11 January as per the summons they had sent him.

Chidambaram also said he had yesterday itself anticipated that as the notices were issued by the SC, "the ED has to conduct some drama in order to cover up some track and hence will conduct searches in Chennai".

According to sources, the ED officials reached Karti's premises at 7:30 am.

The case, registered in May, 2017 pertains to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2006 by the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram. In 2011, Aircel's former head, C Sivasankaran, complained to the CBI that he was being forced by the then Telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran to sell Aircel to the Malaysia-based Maxis Communications group.

It was alleged that Karti received Rs 3.5 crore for assisting INX media in getting FIPB approval.
