Egypt: Abdel Fattah el-Sisi announces reelection bid

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi (C-R) meets with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas (C-L) in Cairo, Egypt, on January 17, 2018.

If no other candidate runs against El-Sisi, Article 36 of the law regulating the presidential elections says that a vote will still be held, requiring a "yes" vote from only 5 percent of voters. The primary results of the first round of the election will be announced on March 29, where decisions on appeals submitted by candidates, if any, will be made.

"Your participation in the election will be a strong message", before jokingly adding that Egyptians would "become exhausted with me again because Egypt needs every sacrifice", Al Jazeera reported, the Egyptian President as saying, in a speech aired live on TV.

Meanwhile, President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi also showed his intention to run for president during his closing speech at the end of the three-day "Tale of a Homeland" conference, where the president and the Egyptian government presented an overview of the projects and achievements made in different fields during the last four years.

The 76-year-old had previously announced his plan to run in an exclusive video message. He went on to win by a landslide in the 2014 presidential elections.

As Egypt's army chief, Sisi became president in 2013 after removing Mohamed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, in a coup.

Those challenging Sisi describe a sweeping effort to kill off their campaigns before they have begun, with media attacks on candidates, intimidation of supporters and a nomination process stacked in favour of the former general.
