Egypt's Salafi Al-Nour Party supports Sisi's 2nd presidential bid

Egypt's Salafi Al-Nour Party supports Sisi's 2nd presidential bid

Egypt's oldest political party will not field a challenger to President Abdul Fatah al-Sisi in upcoming elections, the Wafd announced Sunday.

Monday January 29 is the last day to submit the required paperwork to the National Elections Authority to be allowed to run in the elections, scheduled for March 26-28.

The sources added that Mousa received endorsements from 20 Members of Parliament- the majority of them represent Monufia Governorate- in order to announce his official Presidential bid.

The decision comes after Khaled Ali, the only remaining major presidential candidate besides President Abdel Fattah al Sisi, announced on Wednesday that he was withdrawing from the race, citing a deteriorating democratic process.

They had been part of the team campaigning for General Sami Anan, a former armed forces chief of staff.

Earlier this month, Ahmed Shafiq, former President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, abruptly announced his withdrawal from the race, saying he was "not the best choice for managing the state's affairs in the upcoming period".

Sisi was elected president a year after heading the 2013 military ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, who hailed from the Muslim Brotherhood, amid mass protests against his one-year rule.

The New Wafd Party has been under pressure from some regime supporters to put forward a name to run against Sisi in March's presidential vote.

Signatories included Abdel Moneim Abol Foutoh, an Islamist who garnered almost a fifth of first round votes in a 2012 presidential race; Hesham Genena, a prominent former anti-corruption watchdog chief; and Mohammed Sadat, who halted his own presidential bid this month out of concern for the safety of his campaigners.

The five also complained of a "tight timetable which did not give competitors a real chance to present themselves".
