Electronics extravaganza in Las Vegas suffers power outage

Technology brands including Intel and IBM have been quick to jump into the social conversation with a tongue-in-cheek brand approach after a blackout struck the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Even after the power was restored, companies had to go through the hassle of resetting devices on display - those connected wirelessly with each other, in particular.

Update 6:39pm CT, Jan. 10: The CES blackout was caused by "condensation from heavy rainfall" on a transformer at the Las Vegas Convention Center, convention authorities said in a statement Wednesday. We are opening Central Hall.

Daily Dot technology reporter Phillip Tracy was on site at the Las Vegas Convention Center when it happened.

After close to two hours without power, electricity was restored and the areas that had been evacuated reopened.

CES, the Consumer Electronics Show, features nearly 4,000 exhibitors showcasing their newest consumer technologies. Samsung, Intel, LG and Panasonic were among the tech companies that lost power.

The Consumer Technology Association, which runs the event, has thanked visitors for their patience.

Heavy rainfall caused the rare power interruption, as Las Vegas experienced an unusually heavy downpour that also caused flooding in some of the booths at the CES, including Google's.

During the brief power outage, tweets about the event started trending with the hashtag #CESBlackout.

The power outage wasn't the only mishap of the week.

"After coming to CES for so many years with all of the power draw that this show puts on, I was surprised that happened because it's never happened before to my knowledge", says Tim Alessi, head of home entertainment product marketing for LG Electronics USA. Any tech being shown off at the show that requires an outlet isn't operational. At around 11.15am local time there was a power surge noticed in the North Hall of the LVCC and at the same time power went out in the main Central Hall.

Intel posted a photo of a darkened hall of the show, with the caption, "Introducing Blackoutâ„¢: The biggest thing to hit #CES2018 since #5G".
