Facebook, Google fight extremist content with counterpropaganda

Twitter may notify users whether they were exposed to content generated by a suspected Russian propaganda service, a company executive told USA lawmakers on Wednesday.

When asked for more specific details about its plans to contact potentially millions of people individually, Twitter told NBC News that they would publish a blog post outlining additional details, but said they had nothing more to say than what Monje told the committee.

The initiative follows Facebook's move, announced past year, to create an online tool for people to learn whether they liked or followed Facebook and Instagram accounts generated by a Russian troll farm known as the Internet Research Agency (IRA).

The Connecticut senator criticized Google for not taking action like Twitter and Facebook after it gave him a written response saying its platform is too complicated to be able to identify and provide such information.

Last fall, top officials from Twitter, Facebook and Google appeared before multiple congressional committees to answer pointed questions about their role in facilitating election interference.

"We will be rolling out our response shortly", Monje told Blumenthal. Russian Federation has repeatedly denied the allegations.

Monje did not elaborate how Twitter would do that.

The three social media companies faced a wide array of questions related to how they police different content on their services, including extremist recruitment, gun sales, automated spam accounts, intentionally fake news stories and Russian propaganda. "That's why we support a variety of counterspeech efforts", said Monika Bickert, Facebook's head of global policy management, according to an advance copy of her testimony obtained by CNBC.

The companies repeatedly touted increasing success in using algorithms and artificial intelligence to catch content not suitable for their services.

Hearing quickly moved to broader issues, veering into larger questions about the companies' responsibilities to the public. But the company still deploys some 10,000 human reviewers to monitor videos, Downs said.
