The consumer discretionary sector (.SPLRCD) saw strong gains in media and retail stocks, while the industrials index (.SPLRCI) was helped by airlines after news from No. 2 USA carrier Delta Air Lines (DAL.N).

Wall Street stocks finished at fresh records Thursday behind gains in industrial and petroleum-linked equities, resuming their upward climb after a one-day pullback. The S&P 500 gained 12 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,778.

"Dudley is touching on something that investors should fear", said Brian Battle, director of trading at Performance Trust Capital Partners in Chicago. Investors are also keen for the upcoming earnings season, which kicks off Friday with reports from JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo.

The S&P consumer discretionary index jumped 0.55 percent after data showed households bought a range of goods and figures for the prior month were revised higher, suggesting the economy exited 2017 with strong momentum. It measures the daily stock price movements of 30 large, publicly-owned US companies. The world's largest asset manager reported profit that beat estimates as investors flooded into the relatively low-priced funds.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose to an all-time high on Thursday as investors bet economic growth would pick up steam.

Amazon rose 1.3 percent and provided the biggest boost to the S&P and the Nasdaq.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the NYSE by 1,462 to 1,035. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq have closed lower only once this year, while the Dow has fallen just twice.

Volume so far on U.S. exchanges was 6.88 billion shares, above the 6.39 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
