Facebook to show more posts from Family & Friends and less from Businesses

Facebook's new news feed algorithm will therefore prioritize posts from family and friends, and users will begin to see less posts from businesses. It's a point Zuckerberg acknowledged in his post, writing that "video and other public content have exploded on Facebook in the past couple of years".

Facebook has denied it is a media company, but in recent years, brands, media companies and other content creators have turned to Facebook for its unparalleled reach and engagement.

Referring to a research conducted on social media, he said, "research that shows when we use social media to connect with people we care about, it can be good for our well-being".

He cited academic research indicating that interacting with loved ones is crucial to a person's wellbeing, while reading news articles or watching shared videos may not be.

Your Facebook feed will soon start to look pretty different.

With these changes, as the public content will be shown less, for those who wish to access more content from Pages, Facebook will allow its users to choose "See First in News Feed Preferences" to view the posts from the favourite pages.

Facebook shares fell 5.4% as trading opened on Friday, January 12, after the changes were announced on Thursday. Public posts from companies will become less visible in favour of content published by users' friends, family and groups, and posts that encourage "conversation" and "debate".

"This will be one of the more important updates that we have made". "But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable", he wrote.

The end result, he said, will likely be good for the business in the long term.

Zuck, however, sees the change as a re-adjustment toward what Facebook was meant to do all along: connect people. "By focusing on bringing people closer together - whether it's with family and friends, or around important moments in the world - we can help make sure that Facebook is time well spent".
