FCC chairman may be skipping CES due to death threats

Suffice it to say, FCC chairman Ajit Pai isn't exactly a popular guy these days, and for good reason.

Weeks after repealing net neutrality, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai canceled a planned appearance at a tech industry trade show because of death threats, according to a report. The FCC and Pai did not comment on his decision.

On Thursday, Shapiro told Digital Trends that Pai did not tell him why he was canceling his appearance, but speculated that his decision had to do with his personal security.

Pai was scheduled to appear next Tuesday, alongside the FTC's acting chairwoman, Maureen Ohlhausen, as part of a "candid conversation" moderated by Consumer Technology Association president Gary Shapiro. In turn, many were hoping, perhaps naively, that Pai would finally address numerous longstanding net neutrality concerns he conveniently ignored over the past few weeks.

Shapiro, a Democrat, said in a statement that he plans "to take legal action to protect net neutrality".

Prior the vote the Trump-appointed chairman also received heat for a not-so-funny video making amusing of people worrying about the effects of a net neutrality.

In December, the FCC's meeting to vote on net neutrality was halted because of a bomb threat.

The FCC's repeal order also claims the authority to prevent state and local governments from enacting their own, similar net neutrality and disclosure rules.

Three other FCC commissioners - Brendan Carr, Michael O'Rielly, and Mignon Clyburn - are scheduled to attend a separate panel previewing the 2018 regulatory environment.

For the previous five years Pai, and other FCC and FTC members, have spoken at the event.
