Flake leaves the door open for 2020 presidential run

Flake leaves the door open for 2020 presidential run

The lack of diversity on show at rallies for President Donald Trump and other Republicans show "the spasms of a dying party", according to GOP Senator Jeff Flake. "I tell my colleagues, look, we're going to be running into a head wind, you've got to be prepared for the worst".

But Karl asked Flake if he might run for president in 2020.

Dent said, "Before Donald Trump became president the litmus test for Republicans was about ideological purity and conformity".

Flake said Sunday the GOP is largely appealing to "older white men", adding that the party must find a governing philosophy to be successful in the future.

'I still can not figure out the rationale for the timing of the Comey firing, ' Flake said.

Flake has supported Trump on trying to repeal Obamacare (an effort that failed) and on the GOP tax cut (which Trump signed into law this past week). "But I do believe if the president is running for re-election, if he continues on the path that he's on, that that's going to leave a huge swath of voters looking for something else".

Flake said he'd work with the President but implied the commander-in-chief wasn't always truthful

Since Trump took office almost a year ago, Flake has been one of the more critical voices within the commander-in-chief's own party. "And there's some where - I'm sure in some very ruby-red Republican districts - I'm sure it would be beneficial to have him come in for those candidates, but in some marginal swing districts in the Northeast, I suspect a lot of candidates probably would rather that he not visit".

Democrats need to gain two seats to claim the majority in the Senate and about two dozen to flip the balance of power in the House.

He later said that he understands Trump has serious appeal in some areas of the country, but that he could see more "swing district" Republican candidates asking the president not to appear with them on the 2018 campaign trail. And there are just a limited number of them. Bernie Sanders, an Independent, or Massachusetts Democratic Sen.

Flake gave an ominous warning to the President if he doesn't change his style.

.

"If I set myself on fire for them, they would complain that the temperature of the flame isn't hot enough", he said, explaining how Trump was "a factor" in his decision to retire after his term ends next year.
