Ford Edge ST: Crossover gets hot-hatch thinking, more tech

Ford will fit the brakes on its redesigned 2019 Edge midsize crossover vehicle and its new 2019 Ranger midsize pickup, that will compete later this year with the Chevrolet Colorado and Toyota Tacoma. The 2019 Edge ST joins the refreshed 2019 Edge lineup and also signals the introduction of the first ever ST badged Ford SUV.

Ford's first SUV to be tuned by the Ford Performance team - features the most powerful V6 engine available in its class with a specially tuned 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine pumping out 335 horsepower and 380 lb. -ft. of torque.

All-wheel drive is standard on ST models, optional on the basic Edge.

The Edge ST follows the Fiesta and Focus into ST territory, albeit with a powertrain that wears a "Sport" badge on other models. Ford didn't say if the new Edge ST would come with the same courtesies, but here's hoping we all get a chance to hustle a 2-ton SUV around a track. "From a performance standpoint, and with its SUV silhouette and versatility, it sets a new standard Edge fans will love to drive".

Performance brakes are optional, as are 21-inch wheels and summer Pirelli tires. It will bring Ford's SUV lineup up-to-speed with crosstown rivals General Motors Co. and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, which a year ago unveiled performance trims for full-size SUV models. Evasive steering assist helps a driver avoid a collision with "steering support" to get around an obstacle in the case of imminent impact.

The Edge is especially well-liked by women, said Cristina Aquino, marketing manager for the Edge.

Standard on all Edge models is FordPass Connect, with a Wi-Fi hotspot that gives internet access to up to 10 devices. A Bang & Olufen 12-speaker audio system is also on the options sheet. The standard vehicle comes with a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine paired with an 8-speed transmission.

Inside, a redesigned center console is accentuated by an all-new rotary gearshift dial that frees up space, allows easier access to the wireless charging pad and enhances the vehicle's modern, sophisticated feel. The new Edge makes its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Along with a new sleek grille these features help the Edge look shorter and wider, more like a sports auto than a top-heavy SUV, and help give the Edge more modernity by rounding off the, ahem, edges.

The sportiest Edge available to United Kingdom customers will be the ST-Line trim with Ford's 2.0-litre diesel engine.
