Former Taliban Hostage Charged With Sexual Assault, Confinement

A man who was held hostage together with his family for five years by Taliban-linked insurgents in Afghanistan has been charged with 15 offences, including two counts of sexual assault and unlawful confinement, it has been reported.

Sources close to the family claim that Boyle told them of at least one forced abortion Coleman had while in captivity. The newspaper also stated that there's a court order that bans the publication of information that identifies any of the alleged victims.

A senior official had said Boyle refused to board an American military plane after his rescue over concerns he could face arrest.

He told the Associated Press, shortly after returning to Canada, that the insurgent Haqqani network in Afghanistan had killed his infant daughter and raped Coleman during the years they were held in captivity. Five years ago, he was kidnapped while travelling to the Afghanistan-Pakistan border regions with his second wife, an American named Caitlan Coleman.

The police say Boyle concocted the missing-persons report to divert suspicion from himself.

Boyle is due to appear in court this morning, local time. Granger said he is "eager" to see the evidence against his client.

Eric Granger, one of Boyle's lawyers, stressed to this paper that the accused is presumed innocent of all of the charges against him. "He has no criminal record and has never been in trouble with the police".

Boyle was also charged with one count of forcing an individual to ingest a noxious substance, described as an anti-depressant, and one count of misleading police, according to court documents.

The alleged acts were alleged to have occurred between October 14 and December 30 after the Boyle family returned to Canada following his release.

Coleman was pregnant with their first child when they were abducted and all of their children were born in captivity. The couple and their children were freed in a mission carried out by Pakistani forces based on intelligence from USA authorities. "We look forward to receiving that evidence and defending him against these charges".

Boyle and his family met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the leader's office last month.

I can certainly say that we're pleased that the ordeal they've been through over these past years has finally come to an end.
